Join the discussion to hear tips and hints for working in Culturally safe ways in the arts. Museums & Galleries Queensland’s Training and Professional Development Manager, Tara Callaghan, will present on: ‘First Peoples: A Roadmap for Enhancing Indigenous Engagement in Museums and Galleries’, including some of the pathways that are achievable for artists and arts workers. Tara will be joined by respected arts consultants Donna Biles Fernando, an Aboriginal woman of Muruwari and Ngemba People, and Debbie Abraham; for a discussion about the important community work they have achieved within the public gallery sector.

Tara Callaghan is the Training and Professional Development Manager with Museums & Galleries Queensland. A role that has her working closely with regional and remote galleries, museums and keeping places around Queensland. Prior to this, Tara was the Gallery and Museum Manager for Broken Hill City Council with full directorship of the Broken Hill Regional Art Gallery and the Albert Kersten Mining and Minerals Museum (GeoCentre). Tara holds over 10 years professional experience as a manager and arts administrator in the gallery, museum and university sectors in Queensland and New South Wales.
Donna Biles Fernando and Debbie Abraham are leading consultants with decades of cultural sector experience between them. Donna is an Aboriginal woman of Muruwari and Ngemba People, who holds over 25 year’s experience across government, First Peoples policy, education and curatorial projects. Debbie holds over 30 year’s experience in arts management and strategy, art education, business and working with First Peoples communities on multiple projects and programs for more than 20 years in an art museum context.
