Arts integration offers exciting possibilities for supporting the Mathematics curriculum, and provides diversified learning opportunities for all students, deepening their engagement and enjoyment.
In this session, Jasmine Upton and Dr Katie Burke present an engaging and accessible approach to integrating the Arts curriculum authentically. They offer examples of effective integration of Arts learning with Maths, strategies for interpreting and connecting the Australian Maths and Arts curricula, and an opportunity to develop tools for planning and assessing within their individual contexts.
Given ACARA’s mandate for primary educators to deliver and assess all five subjects in the arts curriculum by 2020, this session will prove particularly beneficial in developing strategies to connect Arts and Maths in the busy modern classroom.
Dr Katie Burke: Katie is an arts educator in the pre-service teacher program at the University of Southern Queensland, where she has 13 years of experience in preparing teachers to deliver authentic and integrated arts learning. Katie is also a former home educator, and combined her love of the arts and alternative approaches to learning in her PhD, in which she investigated the arts teaching practice of home educators. Through this research she additionally developed an extensive website dedicated to providing strategies for integrating arts learning with all curriculum areas, called homeiswheretheartis.com.au. Her passion for the ways in which the arts and creativity can transform learning is applied to her own tertiary teaching practice to enhance student engagement, and she was recently awarded with three teaching awards at USQ for 2018, including a prestigious university level award.
Jasmine Upton: Jasmine is a passionate arts advocate and early-career educator within the primary sector, who has an extensive background in teaching dance and drama. Her Honours research project, Exploring Authentic Arts Education within the State Primary School Context, was the platform for her to initiate programs for integrating the arts across the curriculum, which is currently being adopted within her school. Jasmine has written and implemented units of work that integrate the Arts with other curriculum learning areas, and has witnessed first-hand the success and increased engagement of her students as a result. Jasmine is an effective communicator of strategies that empower other teachers to embrace and integrate the arts in their teaching through practical research-based strategies that honour authenticity in learning.
