Join Rose Rigley for a drop-in creative storytelling activity and make your own artist’s ‘zine’ or pamphlet at Carnival on Collins, Cairns!
An artwork begins with curiosity – the hand-written word and the artistic mark – and then connects us to the stories of people, pets, and possessions that we love. These creative tales help form our identity and give us a sense of belonging.
Using a range of dry media (coloured pencils, felt pens, markers, pastels & stencils), this is a drop-in creative activity for all ages. It will provide a platform for individuals to express their own unique artistic stories. Working on small pages and in series is encouraged, as the multiple drawings/texts are then folded into a ZINE or a covered pamphlet-stitched booklet.
At the end of this workshop, you will be able to
- Create autobiographical mixed media drawings in series.
- Introduce stencils and text into freehand drawings.
- Create 12-page zine through folding & cutting.
- OR create a covered 12-page booklet using simple pamphlet stitch.
This is a slow-paced workshop, with some pre-preparation provided. No previous skills are required – just a playful & inventive attitude. 3 years to adults.
NB: children under the age of 10 must be accompanied/assisted by an adult.
For comfort & safety
- Water bottle & snack
This workshop is delivered as part of the Queensland Regional Art Awards (QRAA) Reframe touring exhibition which will travel to Charleville, Longreach, Blackall, Moranbah and Cairns in 2023.
The QRAA is an annual visual arts prize and exhibition for established and emerging artists living in regional and remote Queensland. The program aims to provide a platform for further professional development. The 2022 QRAA explored the concept of ‘Reframe’, calling artists to enter work which drew upon experiences and observations, reflecting upon the past year or two and responding to our changing world. ‘Reframe’ is an opportunity to see our current situation from a different perspective, to inspire problem solving and decision making and apply learning, whilst constructively responding, shifting and evolving.
This project is supported by the Queensland Government through Arts Queensland. Flying Arts Alliance was a recipient of the Touring Queensland Fund – Round 1a 2023 to deliver Reframe the touring exhibition of the 2022 Queensland Regional Art Awards.

Rose has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows both regionally and nationally. Her current practice focuses on memory, specifically its influence on the present and the objects that act as triggers for recollection. She utilizes installation, mixed media, and sculptural assemblage in a liminal search for beauty through the ordinary and the over-looked.
